Professional deep cleaning of a sandstone floor at Granger & Co Chelsea
We carried out this clean-up in record time, optimising every stage of the process, from start to finish.
On 20 August 2026, the Stone Guru team carried out a professional deep-clean of a sandstone floor at the entrance to Granger & Co., Chelsea, London.
As the site is situated in an area with heavy traffic, the surface had, over time, accumulated dirt, dust and deposits that had penetrated the pores of the stone. Sandstone is a porous natural stone, and ordinary cleaning cannot always remove the dirt that has penetrated deep into it. For this reason, a professional process, tailored to the characteristics of the material, was required.
The initial assessment of the surface was carried out via video call
Prior to the actual work, we carried out a preliminary assessment via a video call with the end client. This assessment enabled us to analyse the general condition of the floor, the level of soiling and the type of access to the work area.
Based on the images we saw and our discussion with the client, we were able to determine in advance:
- What type of work was required
- What kind of professional products would be suitable for sandstone;
- What equipment would be needed to ensure maximum cleaning efficiency
- The estimated duration of the work.
The video assessment simplified the entire process and helped us arrive on site ready to carry out the work, without the need for unnecessary preliminary visits. Furthermore, the difference between the initial assessment and the on-site assessment was negligible, so we can consider that we have streamlined the process of estimating the cleaning work and, consequently, of accurately estimating the materials and time required to achieve the results shown in the photos in this article.
What was the condition of the sandstone floor before cleaning?
Before the treatment, the floor had a dark and uneven colour, caused by dirt accumulated in the stone’s pores. The differences between the areas most exposed to foot traffic and those that were protected were easy to spot, even for someone who is not an expert in stone surfaces.
In the case of a commercial entrance, dirt is constantly brought in from outside and is pressed into the stone’s surface by foot traffic. Over time, the sandstone loses its natural appearance, and simply washing it with ordinary products is no longer sufficient as it yields no results whatsoever.
Cleaning the stone with professional cleaning solutions specifically designed for stone surfaces from Lantania, Italy
The first stage of the process involved applying professional cleaning solutions manufactured by Lantania, Italy. The products were specifically chosen for their compatibility with natural stone and their ability to remove accumulated dirt without affecting the structure or appearance of the sandstone.
The solution was applied evenly across the surface and left to work long enough to soften and loosen the deposits from the stone’s pores.
Choosing the right product is extremely important as this first step determines whether the job will be a success or not.
Sandstone must not be cleaned with aggressive substances or randomly chosen solutions, as these can alter the stone’s colour, damage the surface or leave residues, and these changes can be almost permanent.
Mechanical cleaning using a Hypergrinder single-disc machine
After applying the professional solution, the surface was cleaned mechanically using a Hypergrinder single-disc machine.
The machine’s controlled action enabled the removal of dirt embedded in the stone’s texture and pores, including from high-traffic areas. The process was carried out uniformly across the entire surface, with extra care taken near doors, edges and fixed elements of the entrance.
The combination of Lantania solutions and the professsional Hypergrinder equipment enabled us to achieve a much deeper clean than would have been possible with standard manual washing.
The result achieved in less than three hours
The entire operation took less than three hours.
After cleaning, the difference was immediately visible. The floor regained its natural colours, and the surface became considerably lighter, more uniform and cleaner. The deposits that had previously given it a dark and unkempt appearance were removed, without altering the natural texture of the stone.
This project demonstrates that, when the right products and equipment are used, even a sandstone surface in a high-traffic commercial area can be revitalised quickly, with minimal disruption to the business operating on the premises.
Do you have a sandstone floor that needs professional cleaning?
We offer professional cleaning, maintenance and restoration services for natural stone in Chelsea and throughout the London area.
We can carry out an initial assessment via photographs or a video call to identify the type of stone, the condition of the surface and the appropriate process before scheduling the work. Of course, in most cases a physical assessment of the condition of the stone surfaces is also required, as photographs and videos can misrepresent the severity of the damage.
